In Loving Memory of Boyd Gene Barger

Boyd Gene Barger of Lost Creek, Kentucky, passed away on June 23, 2026, at the age of 82. Born on October 18, 1943, Gene spent his life surrounded by the mountains he loved, the family he cherished, and the stories that became part of his legacy. He was preceded in death by his father, Boyd Barger; his mother, Marie Spicer Barger; and his brothers, Ronnie Barger and Robert Lee Barger.

Gene is survived by his wife, Edith Jewel Miller Barger; his daughter, Clarisa "Reece" Barger-Combs, his son-in-law, David Combs; and the three grandchildren who were the center of his world, Gena Danielle Combs, Jordan David Jaxon Combs, and Cameron Lee Colwell, all of Hazard, Kentucky.  He is also survived by his brothers, Floyd Barger of Chavies, Kentucky, and James Ray Barger of New Carlisle, Ohio; and his sisters, Elizabeth Craft of Keavy, Kentucky, Beatrice Caudill of Viper, Kentucky, and Margaret Barger-Brown of Bulan, Kentucky.

Anyone who knew Gene knew he loved a good story. His grandchildren grew up listening to tales of adventures, hunting trips, mountain life, and unforgettable characters. Some stories seemed absolutely true, others sounded impossible, and many left his listeners wondering where fact ended and imagination began. Gene never seemed too interested in explaining the difference. He simply loved making people laugh, smile, and wonder.

Hunting and fishing were among his favorite pastimes, and he carried a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors and the simple pleasures of life. Yet one of the most remarkable discoveries came late in his life when his talent for songwriting was finally brought to light. After turning 82, Gene wrote several beautiful and heartfelt songs about his youth, his family, and the coal mines that shaped so many Appalachian lives. Those songs revealed a gift that had remained hidden for decades and gave his family one last set of final treasures to hold close. Through his words and music, Gene preserved memories and stories that will continue to be shared for generations.

Gene spent the last several years of his life receiving care at Fresenius Kidney Care in Jackson. He deeply appreciated the nurses, technicians, and staff who cared for him, and he spoke constantly of the love he had for them and the love, kindness and friendship they showed him. His family will always be grateful for the compassion, dignity, and genuine care they provided.

The family would also like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. George Chaney, whose dedication and compassion went far beyond the responsibilities of a physician. Dr. Chaney was a source of comfort, encouragement, and support to Gene and his family throughout many difficult years, and his kindness will never be forgotten.

Gene is also survived by one very special companion and the true love of his life, his faithful dog, Murdoc. Rarely apart, the two shared a bond that only fellow dog lovers can truly understand. Murdoc remained by Gene's side through good days and difficult ones, and he now mourns the loss of his best friend.

Though Gene's voice has fallen silent, the stories he told, the songs he wrote, and the memories he created will continue to echo through the hearts of those who loved him. He will be remembered for his humor, his creativity, his resilience, and the love he had for his family.

Funeral services will be held at Upper Lost Creek Pentecostal Church on Saturday, June 27, 2026, with visitation beginning at 11 am and the funeral starting at noon. Calvin and Carol Bowling will be officiating.

Gene was cremated following his passing. Interment arrangements will be announced by the family at a later date.

In honoring Gene's memory, the family asks that he be remembered not for the day he left this world, but for the life he lived, the laughter he shared, the songs he left behind, and the love he gave so freely to those around him.
